IF ONLY: Week One (8/24/08)

What's your "if only"? Every one of us has one, two or a hundred different scenarios in which we would do or say something differently. That e-mail we wish we wouldn't have sent. That relationship that we should have avoided-or never began. We all have things we would do differently if given the chance. So if life inevitably brings "if only" moments, how do we handle the regrets that haunt us? How can we keep the mistakes we made yesterday from messing up today and tomorrow?

IF ONLY: Week Two (8/31/08)

Are you haunted? No, we're not talking Hollywood B-movie, ghosts around the corner haunted. Are you haunted by the regrets of your past? Do the things you should have done or not done seem to show up where you least expect them? The first step to moving away from the ghosts of our past choices is to name our regrets-to dig down deep beyond our individual choices and discover "why." What were our real motives? What was really causing us sorrow? Who have we hurt? Part of the process of working through our mistakes is learning to put words to our regret.

IF ONLY: Week Three (9/7/08)

Nothing is more instructive than past regret. We may not always know what we should do, but we don't want to do-whatever we did-again. We feel miserable. It is hard to imagine feeling anything but miserable. But would you believe that it is possible to not only quit being that way, but to actually take the remorse from the past and use it as a tool to better your future? Do you believe that even your greatest regret can be redeemed, that your biggest mistake offers promise to your life and the lives of others? Living a life of regret does not have to be the end of the story.

EXPERIENCE:

This month as we talk about regret, I'd love to encourage you with a few words from another parent.

IF ONLYS by Tim Walker

The older I get, the more my list of "if onlys" grows. I turn 40 this year, and there are all kinds of situations I wish I'd handled differently. There are choices I wish I'd made another way. There are conversations I wish I would or wouldn't have had. There are some relationships that I wish I would have pursued more and others I wish I had avoided. There are things I wish I would have tried and others I wish I hadn't.

But most of my regrets come in the area of parenting. There are so many times I walk away from a situation and think, "I wish I would have handled that differently." And because of my perfectionist nature, I start thinking about what a bad dad I am and how much better other parents are. Why can't I be like them? Why can't I handle everything well?

The reality is that there is so much emotion mixed up with parenting, isn't there? The stakes seem so high. I want to make sure my three boys navigate their way through life with less scars and fewer regrets than their dad. And when it comes to disciplining their behavior, it feels like I have to "nip it in the bud" because I'm always thinking about the worst-case scenario.

Just the other day, my oldest son was lying around playing video games. His room was a mess, and the trashcan in the kitchen needed to be emptied. And in my head, I didn't think, "Help him learn the consequences of these decisions." Instead, I thought, "Oh my gosh, if I don't do something about this now, this kid is going to be a total slacker who can't take care of himself. He'll be living in my basement when he's 40!" I know, it's a little extreme. Like I said, the stakes are high and I want him to succeed in life. The problem is, I don't always go about helping him do that in the best way, and I regret it later.

I want to be better at being a dad. I want to help my sons grow up into men of character. The reality I have come to terms with-because it stares me in the face every day-is that I'm not going to get this right every time. As a parent, I'm going to mess up. I'm going to handle things poorly sometimes. Hopefully those will be the times my kids look back on and make fun of me, and not the ones they bring up in a therapy session.

But for me, I can't just stop at naming my regret. So when I overreact to something stupid, or don't address something I should have, I try to learn from the "if only" moments. I try to make a different choice the next time something happens. I try to take a step back and look at the actual situation instead of the one I fear.

Now, I know I'll mess up again. I probably will have a repeat of this "if only" just because I'm a slow learner. But hopefully at some point, the "If onlys" will start to decrease. I'm never going to get it right all of the time, but hopefully I'll start getting it right most of the time. I'll always have regrets-it's just how I'm wired. But when it comes to my kids, I want to have the "if onlys" less and just enjoy the process, even when I'm not at my best.

If you have kids K-5th grade, bring your whole family out for dinner, activities, music, and a show that you won't want to miss. Each month at KIDstuf a new virtue is introduced in a fun and crazy way that both adults and children enjoy. The best thing is that it's all FREE!!!

Here at RiverTown Community Church, we believe what happens at home is more important than what happens at church. Therefore, this environment is to help you take something home to talk about with your kids.......from the drama, music, media, etc.. We also recommend that your family takes part in what is called FAMILY TIMES (TM). FAMILY TIMES (TM) packets are available by going to www.familytimes.org and they will help you live out Deuteronomy 6:6-7. (NIV) "These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

KIDstuf is kicking off on Saturday, September 6th at 5:00pm (doors open at 4:45pm).

Don't miss the blow up games in September!!!

NO DROP OFFS! Children must be accompanied by their parents.

Future Dates:Saturday, October 4th Saturday, November 8th Saturday, December 13th Saturday, January 10th Saturday, February 7th Saturday, March 7th Saturday, April 11th Saturday, May 2nd

RiverTown Community Church (emphasis on the word community) is home to a growing numer of people who share a vision to "REACH people for Jesus Christ, EQUIP them with Faith that works in real life and SEND them in to the world to REACH people for Jesus Christ." We intentionally reach beyond our walls to invest in the surrounding area, so that people are drawn to what God is doing and often decide to "Come and See."

Our style is relaxed and casual, but make no mistake, there are a few things we are very intentional about, like helping our guests feel at home, engaging guests' hearts and minds, helping folks make friends, and making it simple for people to take the next step toward becoming a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ.

Come and experience RCC for yourself.

At RCC, we desire that each person experience authentic community and spiritual growth. And because we believe the best place for sustained life-change to occur is in the context of close relationships, our primary Kitchen Table environment is LIFE Groups.

LIFE Groups are 5-8 singles or 4-5 couples who covenant to meet for 12-24 months. They meet two to four times a month for Bible Study, prayer, fellowship--but more than that--they "do life" together. The meeting time and place are determined by the group itself, according to the schedules of those in the group.

If you are interested in more information on LIFE groups, contact Kevin Yoder.

Marriage can be very challenging! Sometimes we just need someone to help us get over the hard things. There are times when we need to come face to face with our difficulties and along with our spouse learn how to apply God's principles to our relationship. At RCC we provide short-term marriage counseling. For long-term counseling we have counselors that we can refer you to and assist you in getting connected with them. To inquire about counseling, email Melody Smith.

We believe that it is very important for couples to have fun, memorable experiences together. Twice a year we put together an event just for this purpose. That event is called MarriedLife Live.

The first year of your marriage will determine a lot about the future of your relationship. We want to partner with you in setting you up for success.

The way that we can best do this for you is to provide you with Marriage Mentors. Your marriage mentor is a couple that has been carefully chosen to walk with you through your first year of marriage. Marriage Mentors are couples who have been married more than 10 years and have a great "track record." They will take the time to spend at least one evening with you every three months. You will have the chance to learn from their experiences and to be encouraged by them. They will be available to you anytime during this first year should you need them.

To celebrate your marriage, RCC will give you a gift subscription to Marriage Partnership Magazine for one year. This is a wonderful resource for encouragement and learning.

kitchen--(kich'en) n. a room or place for the preparation and cooking of food. - OK, so Webster's doesn't help us much here, but think about it: What's the most popular room in your house? Where do you end up when guests or family come over? That's right. The kitchen. And that's the kind of environment we're shooting for in our small groups. These groups consist of five to eight individuals or four to five couples who have committed to do life together for a season. This is a safe place to open your heart and share your feelings. It's a safe place to ask tough questions. This is where lasting friendships are made. It's where friends become family. It's about commitment and strength and security. And we want to help you get there.

Some examples of Kitchen Table environments are: LIFE Groups, Fusion Small Groups, UpStreet (Kids K-5th grade).

(liv'ing room) n. a room in a home, with sofas, chairs, etc., for social activities, entertaining friends, etc. - Once your guests arrive and are welcomed into your home, you invite them into the living room. Everyone finds a comfortable place to sit, and the interaction begins. (Now you're getting the picture.) This is where you connect with people like yourself. Smaller and more interactive than the Foyer environment, this is a real-life, genuine opportunity to begin friendships... just like you would in your home. Now that you're in the living room, what's next...

foy•er (foi' er, foi ya') n. an entry. - It's the place in your home that serves as the welcome area for guests and new friends. It's the first step, and it's often your only chance to make your guests feel comfortable enough to return. That's exactly how we've designed our entry environments at RiverTown Community Church. Our Sunday morning worship services are "foyer" environments. We want our guests to come back, so we do everything with them in mind. This is where most people will experience RiverTown Church for the first time, and it serves as the perfect place to introduce newcomers to life at RiverTown. So, come on in...

RCC desires to meet the emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of individuals in a variety of life circumstances. While a member of the staff is available when necessary, we believe that an authentic church community should strive to meet individual needs through established relationships, such as those found in various LIFE groups. When additional care is required, the following partnerships and support is available.

Counseling Services
Individual, family and marital counseling sessions are available by appointment only, with priority given to regular RCC attenders. For ongoing couseling, there are professional Christian counselors that most requests are referred to.

Hospital Visits
When illness and injury come, we are affected emotionally and spiritually. Teams of trained, caring members are available to visit for prayer and encouragement if you, or someone you know, is hospitalized. Please contact Kevin Yoder if you are aware of someone ill who should be ministered to.

Financial Assistance & Food Pantry
In a partnership with Capital Area Community Action Agency (CACAA), funds are available to help with short-term needs. RiverTown provides funds, and eligibility is determined by CACAA. For more information, contact CACAA at 674-5067. Their office is located on the 3rd floor of the Calhoun County Courthouse.

Financial Counseling

Each week is full of objects for kids to touch, wild and wiggly activities to get them moving, crafts they will love getting into, and real life situations they can relate to. Our goal is to help each child master one concept at a time by creatively repeating the Bottom Line in a way that it will stick.

Each teaching session begins with activities to introduce kids to the day's topic and help them feel welcome and comfortable in their classroom. Next, preschoolers take part in a large group time that includes a Bible story and worship. We believe preschoolers are wired to worship! So each week we include a worship segment with suggested music to encourage preschoolers to openly express their love for who God is and to praise Him for all He has created. After large group, preschoolers take part in a variety of activities that will help them apply what they're learning. And finally, during small group time children will begin to understand that they can talk to God at any time and in any place. Kids will be encouraged to openly communicate with God in their own words while developing their ability to know and worship Him.

Waumba Land is during our Adult Worship Times of 8:30 a.m. & 10:15 a.m.

As babies we learn to walk, talk and relate to the world around us over a period of weeks and months and years, applying and building on each new thing we've discovered. The walk of a Christ-follower is much the same, we don't wake up one day to the life we've always dreamed of, we learn and apply, learn and apply, learn and apply.

In this series we'll talk about three basic building blocks on which all the rest of our Christain walk is based and give you some practical tools that you can apply as you learn and grow.

Whether you're new to RCC or you've been here a while, this series is just for you. It's so easy for us to assume we have "arrived" when things are going well, but we believe that God has called us keep on moving on and to do more for Him and he has blessed us with everything we need to accomplish His will for us. So, exactly what is He asking of us? Well, fasten your seat belt and hang on for the ride--there's no telling just where God will take us as we put it in DRIVE...because we're not there yet.

So, you're flipping through the channels and all of a sudden you see a guy on a motorcycle trying to do a back flip 60 ft. in the air on a motorcycle and the next thing you know you are glued to the tube. You can't stop watching and why? Because we've come to believe that watching people attempt the impossible with little room for error is "entertainment." We love to watch someone ride the edge.

But is it still entertaining when it's someone you know and they are riding the edge financially, morally, emotionally or professionally? No, the entertainment factor bottoms out and you tense up because you know that they are one lousy mistake away from disaster.

That's what happens when we live without margin in our lives - we ride The Edge and are aways stressed out because we know that one mistake could lead to our downfall.

Join us for this 5 - week series as we talk about how to pull back from The Edge and build margin into our lives.
